Q: How do you connect two 10Base-T hubs?
Three choices:

  • Use a crossover cable from any port on one hub to any port on the other hub.
  • If MDI/MDI-X port is available, plug a straight-through cable from the MDI port on one hub to the MDI-X port on the other hub.
  • If transceiver modules are installed, connect the appropriate cable for that transceiver into the the transceiver port on the other hub (e.g., thin coaxial cable for a BNC to BNC connection).

Q: How do I manage the 10Base-T Switching Hubs?
The HP J3210A Advancestack 10Base-T Management Pack is used to manage the 10Base-T Switching Hubs (J3200A, J3202A, and J3204A). The management pack is included in the J3201A, J3203A and J3205A bundles. The pack includes SNMP network management software and a module that inserts into one of the 10Base-T Switching Hubs in the stack.

Only one management pack is required for the entire stack of 10Base-T Switching Hubs. You can install a second management pack into the stack and use it as a backup unit. In the event that the first module fails, the second unit will take over automatically. For more information, see the hub data sheet.

Q: How would I segment my hubs so that each user group gets better bandwidth?
What is an HP 10Base-T Switching Hub, Management Module and Switch Module?

Q: What is an HP 10Base-T Switching Hub, Management Module and Switch Module?
A 10Base-T Switching Hub is a Ethernet hub with a migration path for growth. It can be used in the same manner as any typical 10Base-T (Ethernet) hub.

The migration path is provided in the form of two modules: The Management Module (HP J3210A) and the Switch Module (HP J3212A). When both modules are inserted into a stack of 10Base-T Switching Hubs, the stack automatically segments all of the ports into four collision domains. The Switch Module then connects the four segments together and provides 4 external ports for direct server/printer connections.

Q: What is Port Switching, and why would I want to use it?
Port Switching is the ability to move ports from one segment to another through software rather than physically moving cables from one hub to another. If the network becomes congested and network performance suffers, the Management Module, coupled with Advancestack Assistant, can be used to move ports onto other segments in the stack. Also, if you have an HP Switch Module in the stack, it can automatically distribute users across all segments upon power up.

Q: How do I load balance my network traffic?
Use the load balancing feature in the Switching Hubs to examines your network and automatically redistributes the ports to balance the network load. You can select the load balancing option using the ASCII console or Advancestack Assistant. This simple, one button approach to balancing network traffic is an ideal way for network administrators to optimize networks without having to do in-depth studies on high traffic areas.

Q: How do I connect two Switching Hubs together in a stack?
The included Stacking Cable. For an extra long stacking cable, call 1-800-538-8787 and request: 28" (71cm) Long Stacking Cable (part number 5182-9869).

Q: How do I connect other types of cabling to be used with the 10Base-T Switching Hubs?
Besides twisted-pair, the hubs can handle thin coax and fiber-optic cabling through the optional HP J2608A ThinLAN Transceiver Module and the optional HP J2606A Fiber-Optic Transceiver Module. (The transceiver modules listed above are the same as those used in the previous Advancestack Hubs.) If you require additional connectivity, the HP J2609A AUI Port Module will allow you to connect any type of external transceiver.

Q: What modules can I put in the Expansion Slot?
The Expansion Slot on the Switching Hubs currently accepts these modules: the HP J3212A 10Base-T Switch Module and the HP J3138A Internet Router Module.

Q: Do the 10Base-T Switching Hubs come with modular adapters?

Q: What is Distributed Management, and how does it differ from SNMP Management?
Distributed Management was used on HP's earlier products such as the Hub-8u, Hub-12, Hub-24, and 100vg Hubs.

Distributed Management was an out-of-band management system for the HP Advancestack 10Base-T and 100vg hubs. Using Distributed Management and HP Stack Manager software (included with Distributed Management hubs), the user could perform management from a Windows-based PC connected to the RS-232 console port of any hub in the chain. All of the chained hubs could then be accessed through the Distributed Management chain using HP Stack Manager. Stack Manager provided a customized graphical interface for each hub, with functions such as hub ID, counters display, activity gauges, port configuration, port statistics summary tables, and hub self-test. These features were available on all hubs with Distributed Management ports.

SNMP Management has replaced Distributed Management.

The following Advancestack hubs use Distributed Management:
HP J2600A Advancestack 10Base-T Hub-12
HP J2601B Advancestack 10Base-T Hub-24
HP J2602B Advancestack 10Base-T Hub-48
