Q: Is it okay to use USB flash drives that have not been tested?
Yes. Most USB flash drive devices (under 32 GBs) should work. This is not a comprehensive list of USB flash drive products, but rather a list of those that have been tested. Your results may vary from those seen in testing, depending on the individual flash drive and formatting options used.

Q: What should I do if the USB flash drive file system is not recognized by the ProCurve switch?
Check the format on a PC. If the device is unformatted, formatting it may enable it to work. Use only a FAT file system. ProCurve switches do not support the NTFS file system.
Q: What are the USB flash drive support limitations?
The USB port supports connection to a single USB mass storage device. USB hubs to add more ports are not supported.
For devices with multiple partitions, only the first partition is supported. Devices with secure partitions are not supported.

Q: What is the meaning of the PoE status LED?
The PoE status LED is a cumulative LED for all the ports/slots. It allows the user to see the PoE state of the switch at a glance without putting all the LEDs into PoE mode. The LED displays the highest level of failure/alert of all the slots/ports. So, if one of the ports is denied power and the port LED is flashing an alert in PoE mode, then the PoE status LED is also flashing an alert. If one of the ports is faulted because of an internal hardware problem, then the PoE status is flashing a fault (i.e., slow-flash amber). You can interpret the LED as follows:
PoE status = green: There is at least one PoE-capable port in the system, and everything is OK.
PoE status = slow flash amber: One or more ports has an internal hardware fault.
PoE status = fast flash amber: One or more ports is denied power or detecting an external PD fault.
PoE status = off: There are no PoE-capable ports in the system or the PoE sub-system is not fully initialized yet.
To determine which port or ports are the source of the fault or warning, press and release the Mode button until the LED mode indication reads PoE.
Note: If there are multiple indications that need to be displayed, they are shown in the following order: slow-flash amber, fast-flash amber, on, off.
When the LEDs are in PoE mode, the Port Link LED is no longer an indication of port link. It is used in conjunction with the mode LED to fully indicate the port’s PoE state.

Q: What does it mean when the ProCurve Switch 5400zl and 3500yl series are called "Premium Edge" devices?
There is an optional software package that may be purchased to enable installation of a Premium Edge license. Premium edge features currently include the following:
- IPv4 OSPF (ECMP)
- PIM SM and PIM DM
- VRRP

Q: How do I buy the Premium Edge Features?
Premium Edge features may be purchased using one of the following part numbers.
- J8994A ProCurve Switch 5400zl Premium Edge License
- J8993A ProCurve Switch 3500yl Premium Edge License
» Return to top
Q: How do the Premium Edge features get enabled?
The general procedure for managing premium licenses requires several different numbers:
- registration ID-comes with the license you purchased, and represents your right to install a particular type of license on a particular type of network device.
- hardware ID-identifies the ProCurve device that you are licensing, and includes the device's serial number and an identifier for the premium feature that your are licensing.
- license key-generated by the My ProCurve portal, based on a registration ID and a hardware ID. When you install this number into your ProCurve device, it enables the premium feature that you are licensing.
- uninstall verification ID-generated if you uninstall a premium license from a ProCurve device. You can use it to generate a new registration ID on the MyProCurve portal, which allows you to transfer the license to a different device.
If you are using the manual method, you will work with these numbers using both the My ProCurve portal (through your Web browser) and the device's CLI. If you are using the ProCurve Manager method, you will work with these numbers using PCM.
Step-by-step instructions are documented in the ProCurve Switch 3500yl/5400zl Premium License Installation Guide.

Q: Is the premium-license stored in the chassis or the management module?
The premium edge license information is stored in the chassis. In the unlikely event it might be necessary to replace the Management Module, the Premium Edge License will be retained.
Q: With a Premium Edge license, can I expect to update to a different software revision than switches that don't have the license?
No, both the intelligent edge and premium edge features will run from the same version of software. The feature set change is a result of installing the license.

Q: Do power supplies come standard with the 5400zl? What are the minimum power requirements?
Power supplies do not ship with the base chassis products. They must be ordered separately. This allows you maximum flexibility in planning for your network's power needs. Bundles are available in both the 6 and 12 slot chassis. The bundled products include power supplies as shown below. There is an ordering guide available that can help you determine your power supply needs, based on the PoE and redundancy demands of your environment. |

Q: Can I buy a spare management module?
While past experience on other ProCurve switches has shown an extremely low failure rate on the management functionality, there may be some customers who would like to have a spare management module on hand. Upon failure, the management module can be swapped out to restore switch functionality. Installing the new management module will cause the switch to reboot.
The spare management module does not contain a compact flash unit. The flash unit from the original board will be installed in order to preserve the configurations and switch software that was in the original management module. The compact flash can be ordered separately, if desired. The part numbers below may be ordered at http://www.hp.com/buy/parts (at the top of the page select a different country if needed).

Q: Are 5400zl management modules hot swappable?
No. The chassis must be powered down prior to removal and replacement of the management module. A chassis without a management module will remain in a power-down state.

Q: Can the fan trays be hot swapped?
Switch 5400 fan trays can be hot-swapped as long as the new tray is installed within three minutes of the previous tray being removed (to prevent switch shutdown due to overheating). In the event of fan failure, you should call your country's ProCurve Support Center. If you would like to have a spare fan tray on hand, the following part numbers may be used for ordering at http://www.hp.com/buy/parts (at the top of the page select a different country if needed).

Q: What type of power cords do the power supplies use?
The power cords available for these switches are sized for the increased current that can be drawn when using PoE. As a result, they are uncommon and you may want to consider having a spare on hand. They can be purchased through the HP Parts Web site at: http://www.hp.com/buy/parts (at the top of the page select a different country if needed). Note that the 1500W power supply is 200V only.

Q: What do the power cord connectors look like?
The following table displays the connectors for the regional power cords.
